Description
Gallic Empire, Marcus Aurelius Marius, Romano-Gallic Emperor 269 AD, Æ Antoninianus (3.14g, 18mm), mint II (Treveri?) 269 AD. Obverse: Radiate-crowned, draped and cuirassed bust of Marius facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP C M AVR MARIVS AVG”. Reverse: Victoria stands facing to the left, draped in stola and holding laurel wreath aloft in right hand and long palm branch in left, legend surrounds, “VICTORIA AVG”. Softly struck on the obverse although with clear naming and decent enough portrait, the reverse similar in strike, a commendable offering, Very Fine, reverse near Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Mārcus Aurēlius Marius Augustus”, stating the emperor’s regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads “victōria Augustī”, with an English translation of “victory of the Augustus”.
