Ptolemaic Empire, Ptolemy III ‘Euergétēs’ (‘the Benefactor’), Basileus of Ptolemaic Egypt 246-222 BC, Silver Tetradrachm (14.07g, 26mm, Ptolemaic standard), dated regnal year “B” or “2” (28th Jan. 245 BC – 27th Jan. 244 BC), Ake-Ptolemais mint. Obverse: Diademed head of Ptolemy I Sōtḗr facing to the right, wearing aegis. Reverse: Eagle stands perched upon thunderbolt left, wings closed, regnal year “N” above “A” to right field, monograms “ΠT” above “ME” to left field, legend surrounds, “ΠTOΛEMAIOY ΣΩTHPOΣ”. Svoronos-1035. Despite some edge issues to 4h and a few marks, the piece is notably sharp, particularly the portrait, and overall quite pleasing to the eye with nice light toning, good Very Fine.
The obverse Ancient Greek legend reads “ΠTOΛEMAIOY ΣΩTHPOΣ” or “Πτολεμαίου Σωτῆρος”, Latinized as “Ptolemaíou Sōtêros”, with an English translation of “Of Ptolemy the Saviour”.
