Description
Cilicia, Tarsos, Mazaios, as Achaemenid Satrap of Cilicia 361/0-334 BC, Silver Stater of two siglos (10.80g, 22mm, Persian Standard), circa 361-334 BC. Obverse: Baaltars seated left on backless throne facing forward, drapery flows from his waist onto his uncrossed legs, holding aloft an eagle, grain ear and branch of grapes in his right hand and long sceptre in his left, “B’LTRZ” in Aramaic to right, “NS” in Aramaic to lower left, “M” in Aramaic below throne. Reverse: Lion attacking Bull to the left, monogram below, “MZDY” in Achaemenid Aramaic above. Casabonne Series 2, Group C; SNG Levante-106. A most sublime and very sharp example, the only very minor setback being the ever so slight uneven strike, causing weakness through Baaltar’s facial features, overall very choicely centred and one of the finer examples available for commerce, Mint State.
