J. Norris served with the 3rd Brigade of the Bengal Horse Artillery as a Bomber during the Anglo-Sikh Wars, serving with his brigade at the battle of Moodkee on the 18th of December 1845 – with no clasps, Norris did not have participate in the subsequent battles during the Sutlej Campaign.
