Description
Charles I, King of England 1625-1649 AD, Gold Unite of 20 shillings (9.03g, 33mm), Castle mintmark (1627-1628), Group B, Class 1a, Bust 2a, struck at the Tower mint, London under the King. Obverse: Crowned Bust of King Charles I facing left, wearing elaborate attire with ruff and mantle, denomination “XX” behind, legend around, “· CAROLVS· D.’G.’ MAG.’ BR.’ FR.’ ET HI.’ REX·”. Reverse: Crowned flat-topped Shield of Arms of the House of Stuart within moderately ornate frame, legend around, “· FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA·”. Spink-2687; North-2148. Very Fine
Some typical points of weakness, despite this it’s a rather pleasing example struck on a lovely round flan and fully centred; the Castle mm. is quite clear and there are parts with near EF detail – overall a nice example.
