Description
Roman Empire, Lūcius Aelius Caesar (Aelius), as Caesar of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty and ‘Imperial Heir’ of Hadrian 136-138 AD, Silver Denarius (3.28g, 17mm), Rome mint 137 AD. Obverse: Bare head of Aelius facing to the right, legend surrounds, “L AELIVS CAESAR”. Reverse: Pietas stands right, draped and raising right hand and holding box of perfumes in left, small altar by her feet, “PIETAS” to field either side, legend surrounds, “TR POT COS II”. RIC-439a; RSC-35. Deeply toned each side with some lighter amber shades to reverse, well centred, good Very Fine.
The Latin legend spanning across both obverse and reverse is the name and titles of the Caesar, reading unabridged as “Lūcius Aelius Caesar, Tribūnīciā Potestāte, Cōnsule iterum”, with an English translation of “Lucius Aelius Caesar, holder of Tribunician Power, Consul for a second time”.
