Description
A nice type example of an Australia QSA with two clasps, medal unmounted, near Extremely Fine, further research is recommended although little information is likely available.
Queen’s South Africa Medal, type 3, clasps “TRANSVAAL” and “SOUTH AFRICA 1902”, impressed “2427 TPR: F.C. WILTON AUS: COM: H”.
Frederick George Wilton attested for service overseas in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War and was posted to the 4th Battalion, Second Contingent of the Australian Commonwealth Horse as Private 2427. Many men serving with the Australian Commonwealth horse had previous service with various contingents, although it appears Frederick had not and was awarded his QSA with only two clasps, the standard entitlement for just serving with this unit. Little is known of his life personally or specific details of his service in South Africa, it may be assumed however that he was Victorian-born as the 4th Battalion was raised from Victoria, South Australia or Western Australia (although unlikely, he may have enlisted from the latter two states). Both clasps are confirmed on the entitlement list.
