Tasmania, Tasmanian Council of Education, Specimen Award Medal struck in copper (41.5mm) by British medallist and seal-engraver Joseph Shepherd Wyon. Obverse: Crowned Head of Queen Victoria facing left, “J.S. WYON S.C.” below, legend around, “VICTORIA REGINA”. Reverse: Laureate and Togate female figure (Britannia?) facing left, seated on a curule chair placed upon a pedestal as she crowns a student kneeling before her with a laurel wreath, togate figure stands over the two with arms open; stacked books and scrolls, male bust, and telescope to left, “TASMANIAN COUNCIL OF EDUCATION” in exergue, legend above, “SUNT SUA PRÆMIA LAUDI” (“Here are the rewards for merit”). An exceptional piece of art, a specimen of a later award medal struck in gold. Mint State and Very Scarce
