Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Roman Emperor from 54-68 AD, Gold Aureus (7.51g, 18mm), Rome mint 59-60 AD. Obverse: Bare head of Nero facing to the right, with youthful features, legend surrounds, “NERO · CAESAR · AVG · IMP ·”. Reverse: “EX·SC” central within oak wreath, legend surrounds, “PONTIF · MAX · TR · P · VI · COS · IIII · P · P ·”. Sear-; RIC I-19; BMC-12; Calicó-421. An exceptional and attractive piece of Nero, displayed bare head in simple yet powerful manner; exceptionally well centred. Difficult to capture through the lens of a camera. Near Extremely Fine, reverse better.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Nero Caesar Augustus Imperator”, naming his many titles as Emperor. The reverse Latin legend reads “Pontif Maximus, Tribunicia Potestas Sexta, Consul Quartas, Pater Patriae”, translating to “Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, holder of Tribunician Power for the sixth time, Consul in his fourth term, Father of the Nation”. Within the oak wreath bears the words “Ex Senatus Consulto”, translating to “In Accordance with a Decree of the Senate”.
