United Kingdom, Peninsular Wars, Lieutenant General Thomas Graham Lord Lynedoch, Capture of San Sebastián Medal in white metal (41mm), 1820, engraved by Thomas Webb and Geoge Mills. Obverse: Bare-headed Bust of Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch GCB GCMG, facing to the right, “MODELED BY P. ROUW. MUDIE DIR . WEBB.F.” below bust, legend surrounds, “LIEUT: GENERAL LORD LYNEDOCH”. Reverse: Roman general central advancing forward, head turned to the right, wearing crested centurion helmet, armour and billowing cloak, holding crown above in left hand and sword below in right, to the left background an inflamed fortress, to right sinking vessels, “MUDIE D” surrounds to left, “MILLS F” surrounds to right, “S. SEBASTIAN AUG. XXXI MDCCCXIII” in exergue. BHM-761; Eimer-1036. An imposing medallic piece of quite sophisticated engraving work, the reverse depicting a Roman general in the image of contemporary portrayals of Britannia, standing formidably amongst the ensuing destruction in the background portraying the victory at San Sebastián. Some unfortunate points of surface oxidation on the obverse, clear in the illustration, otherwise with details virtually as struck, Extremely Fine.
