Victoria, Melbourne International Exhibition 1880, Silver Prize Medal (92.05g, 51mm) by H. Stokes, awarded to Lowe Sleigh of Bevan & Co Birmingham for Carriage fittings. Obverse: Crowned and Veiled Head of Queen Victoria facing left, legend around, “MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION MDCCCLXXX :”. Reverse: Olive wreath surrounds inner legend “ “VITAM EXCOLVERE PER ARTES” ”, medallist name “H. STOKES” below. Edge: Inscription engraved, “LOWE SLEIGH BEVAN & CO. BIRMINGHAM_ CARRIAGE FITTINGS”. Small edge bruise at 11h, otherwise a nicely toned, scarce piece of Australiana. Extremely Fine.
