M. Aemilius Scaurus & P. Plautius Hypsaeus, Moneyers of the Roman Republic, Silver Denarius (4.28g, 16mm), struck at Rome 58 BC. Obverse: King Aretas of Natatea, kneels in supplication to right beside a camel, presenting an olive branch, “[M SCAVR] AED CVR” above, “EX [S C]” in field, “REX ARET[AS]” in exergue. Reverse: Togate figure of Jupiter commanding Quadriga to left, brandishing thunderbolt overhead, scorpion being trampled below horses’ hooves, “P HYPSAEV[S] / AED CVR” above quadriga, “CAPTVM” upward to right, “[C] HYPSAE [COS / PREIVER]” in exergue.
