Description
Justin I, Byzantine Emperor from 518-527 AD, Gold Solidus (4.40g, 21mm), struck at Constantinople mint circa 519-527 AD. Obverse: Pearl-Diademed, Helmeted and Cuirassed Bust of Justin I facing forward, holding spear which rests on his right shoulder and shield, bearing a motif of a horseman spearing a fallen enemy, which rests on his left shoulder, legend around, “DN IVSTINVS P P AVG”. Reverse: Male Angel stands facing forward, holding long linear cross with his right hand and globus cruciger in his left; star within right field, legend around, “VICTORIA AVGGG A”, “CONOB” in exergue. Sear-56. An impressive piece of Justin I, well centred and attractive – the appeal only bolstered by a fortunate absence of graffiti. Near Extremely Fine / Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Dominus Noster, Justinus, Pepetuus Augustus”, translating to “Our Lord, Justin, perpetual Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “Victoria Augustorum” followed by the 1st officina letter “A”, translating to “Victory of the Augusti”.
