Description
Decius Junius Brutus Albinus, Imperatorial Rome 49-27 BC, Silver Denarius (3.83g, 18mm), struck at Rome 48 BC. Obverse: Head of Pietas, the personification of Loyalty, facing right, “PIETAS” behind. Reverse: Clasped hands over winged Caduceus, “ALBINVS BRVTI•F” around below. Sear-427; RSC Postumia-10. Although an indistinct banker’s mark to neck, this piece features a lovely and attractive obverse – there is some lovely underlying colour, especially to obverse. Good Very Fine.
This particular Moneyer was initially a major supporter of Gaius Julius Caesar’s Gallic wars and his civil war against the Pompeians, hailed by Caesar as beloved like a son, only to then play a major role in the Dictator’s assassination on the Ides of March; ironically, this piece features Pietas, the personification of Loyalty.
