Description
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dyansty 54-68 AD, Æ As (10.96g, 29mm), Lugdunum mint circa 66 AD. Obverse: Bare head of Nero facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP NERO CΛESΛR ΛVG P MAX TR P PP”. Reverse: Victoria flying to the left, drapery flowing, holding shield inscribed “SPQR” with both hands, “S C” in field either side. RIC-543; BMC-381; Cohen-302. Although typically a touch weakly struck on the reverse, the portrait is bold and very appealing, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Nerō Caesar Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestās, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Imperator Nero Caesar Augustus, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician Power, Father of the Nation”. The Reverse Shield bares the Latin phrase “Senātus Populusque Rōmānus”, with an English translation of “The Senate and People of Rome” The Reverse letters in the field reads “Senātus consultum”, with an English translation of “By Decree of the Senate”.
