Description
Titus Flavius Vespasianus minor, as Augustus of the Flavian Dynasty 79-81 AD, Silver Denarius (3.55g, 18mm), Rome mint 80 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Titus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP TITVS CΛES VESPΛSIΛN ΛVG PM”. Reverse: Dolphin facing to the right set above tripod, legend surrounds, “TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII PP”. RIC-129var (obv as RIC-128). A very choice and most complete example, the portrait quite dignified and of typical Flavian style accompanied by an extensive titulature which continues from the obverse to the reverse, details good Very Fine or a touch better.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Titus Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus, Pontifex Maximus”, with an English translation of “Imperator Titus Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs”. The Obverse legend continues onto the Reverse and reads “Tribūnīciā Potestās nōnum, Imperātor decimum quīntum, cōnsulāritās octāvum, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Invested with Tribunician Power for the ninth time, holder of the position of Imperator for the fifteenth time, honoured with the office of Consul in his eighth term, Father of the Nation”.
